This poem intertwines the imagery of mountains and water with human emotion. The first two lines use mountain peaks and clear springs as metaphors, reflecting the rise and flow of feeling — a restraint that holds deep affection within its silence. In the latter half, emotion becomes clearer and gentler: the act of sharing a mountain spring symbolizes a longing for spiritual connection and mutual understanding.
This poem is often sung as a paired dialogue with Poem No. 14. In the first, the man confesses his affection to the woman, using the spring as a metaphor — “to drink from the same water is to share one heart.” In response, the woman replies with a metaphor of fish: “A good fish never takes the bait offered freely.” She would rather eat moss by the stream, expressing modesty and self-respect. Together, the two form a delicate and moving conversation of love — one that reveals sincerity, restraint, and emotional balance.
