Lord, a Little Peace

本来只是想把我的中文歌《空》改编成英文，找不到合适的词，却找出了更多人生疑问。于是“空——”变成了一声声“God…”，后来尝试编曲，又意外做成了这首我很喜欢的圣诗。

从自己的生活，想到世界上的贫穷、战争和孩子们的苦难。有很多问题，没有答案，就先唱出来吧。我们想要的，不过是一点安宁。

I have so many questions.
I hardly know how to begin.

Morning comes, and work is waiting,
Hands keep busy through another day.
“Peace to you.” “I’m holding on, I’m trying.”
Still the hidden burdens never fade.

I am not expecting days without sorrow,
Only room to breathe a little while.
Every time I think the ground grows steady,
Something shifts beneath my feet again.

Lord,
I have tried to walk in kindness.
Why does life press down so heavily?

Lord,
May I find a breath of stillness
Before the storm winds rise again?

Lord,
Will I ever trust the silence
Without fearing what may come?

Lord,
I have never asked for kingdoms.
Why is a little peace so hard to find?

I turn the news down when the children enter,
Set their plates and call them safely home.
On the screen, a parent holds a picture,
Pleading, “Has anyone seen my child?”

Some go hungry so their children can eat,
Some throw out what others pray to find.
One child drifts to sleep with gentle singing,
One hears bombs and asks if they will die.

Lord,
Why is there such bitter sorrow?
Why must many struggle just to live?

Lord,
Why is so much food left over
While the little ones lie down unfed?

Lord,
Why do those who choose to start a war
Keep their children far from harm?

Lord,
We are only asking for mercy and peace.
Why is sharing peace so hard?

One child’s born where loving hands await them,
One is born where help may never come.
Neither chose the life that lies before them,
Neither earned the weight of all this pain.

If we all are precious in Your keeping,
Why do lives begin so far apart?
Before a child can even cry out, “Father,”
Some already bear a heavy cross.

Lord,
Why is there such bitter sorrow?
How much hurt is born from human hands?

Lord,
We would teach our children mercy,
Yet we send them forth to fight.

Lord,
What does earthly victory mean
To the one whose child will not return?

Lord,
All of us beneath one endless sky,
Why is lasting peace so hard to find?

I wonder if there’s someone up above us,
Watching how we live from far away.

Do they grieve,
Or turn away?

From that height,
Can they see a world made one?
