Huang Ai-yun:
Back in the day there were welfare centers in the vegetable market. Everyone sold vegetables. fish and meat needed to be kept fresh...
So the people who sold shaved ice also sold ice to the vendors. We bought our house from the guy who sold ice. In order to deliver the ice, he rode a tricycle. One day an electric wire fell, and you understand that the tricycle was wet from delivering ice. When it ran over the wire, the old guy was electrocuted.
His friend came to us and asked if we wanted to buy the deceased ice vendor’s house. No one was selling ice, so another old guy next door picked up the business. When he was too old to sell, my husband carried on the business. We stopped though, because the Banqiao mafia wanted in on the ice business. It was lucrative back then. They wanted to have monopoly so they forbade us from selling us. We worked hard on the ice business but we didn't rely entirely on selling ice. Mostly it was done to help the old guy. Our main gig was selling betel nuts, we also had other stuff going on. So we gave it up to them.

Zheng Yu-yan: Auntie, why not tell us where you're from, and why are you living here?

We have been living here for forty years, not long enough, there are people who've been living here way longer. Like Qi Ben-zhong, his family's been here way longer. It’s a sad fate to have lived here so long and face eviction… Originally there was a road here that connected to the road outside. Then the road outside was widened and the houses had to relocate to the back. So the residents were cramped together, and that little alley disappeared. There used to be a public toilet in the middle. It was quite makeshift. Every house was quite makeshift. If there was no toilet in the house they used the public one.

Zheng Yu-yan: So where are you from, auntie?

Me? I am a southerner, married and moved to Miaoli. We originally settled in Xizhi, but moved to Banqiao in search of a better life. When we came to Banqiao, I sold betel nuts and also worked as nanny and caretaker of the elderly. Later, a friend asked if we wanted to buy the ice vendor’s house. The house was cheap, like 50,000 or 60,000 NTD, so here we are. There were eight of us living on this floor. It was quite difficult. It was very tiny but we still had to divide it into two rooms. And the living room was so small! It was really difficult.

Zheng Yu-yan:
Let me recap what she just said. She bought this place and what's next to it? The public toilet for the Fu Lin First Village. Now there are buildings built on it! Right here. This is where the public toilet was built. Before, there was a road in this area connecting to the road on the opposite side, but the road was widened in 1984-5, so all the houses had to be pushed back. 'cause the houses were pushed back...this lane here, that lane there, they are all gone now.
