〈萬千花蕊慈母悲哀〉是我認為珂拉琪樂團目前造詣最高的一首。它將歷史事件、宗教信仰、情感隱喻等多元素材,巧妙和諧地融合進現代音樂。歌詞的內涵和縝密結構彷彿在讀文章新詩一般,邏輯清晰且故事性完整,同時蘊含豐富的文學修辭技巧,整體來說就是精緻出色的藝術作品。

自己的鋼琴翻彈經過一個多月以來的血汗聽奏,嘗試復刻出從開頭妻子焦急的來回踱步聲,電台的雜訊,到喊出南無觀世音菩薩的嘶吼,以及對神佛的絕望祈求甚至不滿。最後子彈上膛、想像武力鎮壓的槍決現場(五連音)⋯⋯儘管離完美演藝還太過遙遠,但對我這僅以音樂作為休閒的學生來說,已經是有莫大成就感的滿足。

我曾經問過阿嬤,是否還記得她和曾祖父母在台灣二二八事件和白色恐怖時期的經歷。阿嬤只半開玩笑地用台語回說:「種田都忙不完了還吃飽太閒跟別人去亂!」我噗哧地笑了。確實,我們只是種稻米的小農家,連小孩都很難養得活(爺爺小時候兩個兄弟就沒能成功長大),怎麼可能還去參與什麼政治社會運動?稻穀豐收、能養家活口,將小孩健康帶大,便是曾祖父母最大的生活目的。在知識份子噤聲懼怕的白色恐怖時期,我們因為無知、無暇和無能,反而平安度過了一劫,何嘗不也是一種福份?而現在的我,生活在一個相對自由穩定的社會,不需操心基本的生活需求,甚至能感受到學習的疲憊,以及面對各種現代人的煩惱,不也都是那時候的人,未曾敢想的奢望?

"Mother's Grief over Countless Flowers" is, in my opinion, the peak accomplishment of the band Collage thus far. It skillfully and harmoniously integrates diverse elements such as historical events, religious beliefs, and emotional metaphors into modern music. The depth and intricate structure of the lyrics are akin to reading a piece of modern poetry, with clear logic and a complete narrative, while simultaneously incorporating a rich array of literary rhetorical techniques. In totality, it is an exquisitely remarkable piece of art.

My own piano cover, produced through more than a month of practice and listening to the original song, attempts to replicate everything from the anxious pacing of the wife at the beginning, the static of the radio, to the roar of calling out to Namo Avalokiteshvara, and even the desperate pleas and dissatisfaction towards the gods. Finally, the loading of the bullets and imagining the execution scene of martial law enforcement (the tendon-exhausting quintuplets)... Though I am far from perfect performance, it is a tremendous achievement and satisfaction for me, who only pursues music leisurely as a student.

I once asked my grandmother if she remembered anything from the time of the 228 Incident and the White Terror period in Taiwan that she and my great-grandparents experienced. She joked in response, "We were so busy farming that we didn't have time for anything else!" I chuckled. Indeed, we were just a small farming family growing rice, struggling to keep our children alive (two of my grandfather's brothers failed to grow up in childhood). How could we have possibly been involved in political or social movements? Harvesting a bountiful crop, being able to support the family, and raising children healthily were the greatest aspirations of my great-grandparents. During the White Terror period, when intellectuals lived in fear and silence, we weathered the storm due to our ignorance, lack of time, and inability. Isn't this also a kind of blessing? And now, living in a relatively free and stable society, without worries about basic needs, I can even experience the fatigue of strenuous learning, as well as dealing with all sorts of modern-day annoyances. Aren't these all luxuries that people from that time could not dare to imagine?
