此詩以魚為喻,將愛情中「有緣無分」的無奈化為詩意的比興。「不食餌」的魚,既象徵女子的矜持與自守,也隱含命運使然的悲涼。前兩句的水域意象清澈流動,如情意初萌的自然流露;後兩句則轉為克制與止步,映現情感受阻的現實,或是世俗婚配的限制,或是天意的阻隔,終究良緣難成。

此詩常與第十一籤對唱成對,後者為男子以山泉寄情,言「同飲一水,如同一心」;此詩則為女子婉拒回應,以魚作喻,說「好魚不吃自來的餌」,寧可獨自於溪邊食青苔。兩詩一唱一答,一進一退,構成一場微妙而動人的情感對話。

This poem uses the image of a fish to express the quiet sorrow of love bound by fate — an affection destined yet unfulfilled. The “fish that does not take the bait” symbolizes a woman’s modesty and self-restraint, while also suggesting the melancholy of destiny’s barriers. The first two lines flow with the clarity of water, reflecting the natural emergence of affection; the latter two shift toward restraint and distance, portraying the reality of love constrained — whether by social customs or by fate itself.

This poem is often sung as a pair with Poem No. 11. In that earlier song, the man conveys his affection through the image of a mountain spring — “to drink from the same water is to share one heart.” Here, the woman replies with quiet resolve, saying, “A good fish does not take the bait offered freely.” She chooses instead to eat moss by the stream, expressing both modesty and sincerity. Together, the two form a tender and nuanced dialogue of love — one advancing, the other retreating, yet both equally moving.
