民謠常見的曲調有數種——如〈思雙枝〉、〈楓港調〉、〈四季春〉、〈牛母伴〉、〈五孔小調〉、〈平埔調〉、〈守牛調〉等。傳唱者依詩詞的情緒、主題與自身經驗靈活選調，使每首詩都映照出獨特的生命側影。

「斑鳩」常成雙出現，民間多以此比喻情侶。「樹頂毋歇是來歇土腳」一句以反覆轉折之語，映照出樸實無華的愛情觀，不追求轟轟烈烈，只求安穩白頭。前兩句以鳥喻人，後兩句則直抒情意，全詩節奏明快、語氣真摯，展現對愛情的期待與對情人的深切眷戀。
