Agua

My town in Texas is very famous for cumbia music. I live two blocks from the monument of Selena who is very famous in my city.

I wrote this one with influences I enjoy, like the electro influences that the Brazilian band Suba used with Samba and that French/Argentinian band Gotan Project did later with tango, and I thought, I can do this for cumbia and add elements of Afrobeat fresh in my mind I just listened to my favorite Fela Kuti song, who was from Nigeria, who wrote "Water No Get Enemy." It reminded me of our troubles, which is that we are running out of water.

I put all these influences together to write a song about the drought in my city and the corrupt government that mismanages it.

If I wasn't lazy I would probably sing it myself, and probably should record a version later but I'm shy about singing in Spanish. It is my third language. The voice in this recording is technically perfect of course, but isn't angry like I would be at my city. It doesn't convery the disappointment that only a real person can have.

But I enjoyed the combination of sounds from so many places from so many genres of music I like and I wanted to share.
