Zheng Yu-yan:
Aunty Xu Ping is a classic veteran’s child, having worked in a hospital as a cleaner herself. In fact, many of the DaGuan’s residents are children of veterans or veterans themselves, yet in the absence of other options have no choice but to live here.

Over here is Uncle Hong’s house (Uncle Hong, are you there? Uncle Hong?). Uncle Hong is originally from ChangHua county. Historically, DaGuan was primarily a residence for veterans and their families. But in the 50s and 60s, Taiwan’s economy really started to take off. In order to capitalise on emerging job prospects, many residents of smaller towns and villages migrated to Taipei, and many of them came to Fuzhou district in search of better work opportunities and living conditions. Let’s see what Uncle Hong has to say.

Hong Ying-yuan:
Hi everyone, my name is Hong Ying-yuan. I’ve been a resident of this community for 35 years now. I first came here in 1982, before DaGuan Road was even widened to four lanes, and when the 2nd ring road was nothing but cobbled stones. My hometown is Erlin Township in Changhua, and I would come here to visit my Aunt on my father’s side, she lived in number 26. At the time time, Taiwan was just beginning to allow Taiwanese citizens to return to the Chinese mainland to visit relatives. An old veteran sold the property to me, and I’ve lived here from then until now. But at the time I didn’t know, not everyone’s willing to be like that. When we decided to buy [the property] from him - after all he gave us all the paperwork- we thought we could live and work in peace. It wasn’t until 2008 when the Veterans Affairs Office reported us did we realise something wasn’t quite right. A large majority of the community’s residents moved here with their families, but when they [the veterans] returned to the mainland and took all their money with them, and so that’s what caused this whole situation. That’s my understanding anyway.

Zheng Yu-yan:
Just now as Uncle Hong was explaining, in the 80s when Taiwan first allowed residents to visit relatives in China, many of the veterans and their dependants chose to return to the mainland and sold their properties off to rural migrants who’d just moved to Taipei. In a moment I will introduce the other rural migrants who live in the community. Uncle Hong is one of the members of the Daguan self-help group. Thanks again Uncle Hong.
