This song is based on an ABC investigation. Laurense was raped. She reported her case to the police three times.
The first time she went to the police, “can I please speak to someone? I would like to report a rape.” Two lady detectives came out; pretty much detailed everything. They said they wanted to help and investigate if she wanted to, but it’s gonna be hard for them.
She went back to them few weeks later to talk to the same lady detectives; only been told they weren’t there anymore. She had to start all over again. They said they didn’t think she had a very good case, while she had been told before she did have a case. They said it’s gonna be hard for them, but they would pursue it if she really wanted to do it.
The third time, she called up and said she would like to pursue an investigation. That time she had to speak to a male detective. Again she had to tell her story. “It would be hard for us.”
It has been six year now. She has been given up on it.
Laurense’s experience is not unique. Roughly one in five reports are withdrawn by Australian police.
